Enbridge Gas Warning Tags

A Red Tag or a Warning Tag just means that a TSSA certified and licensed gas fitter has determined that your equipment in its current condition is unsafe to use. The most common reason why a hot water tank or furnace is given a Red Tag is due to improper installation or a venting-related problem where carbon monoxide might leak into your house which can cause potentially life-threatening situations.

Be aware that a licensed gas fitter is not punishing you and doesn’t hold a grudge against you – in fact, licensed gas fitters are all required by law to tag any gas-powered equipment that they deem to be hazardous or unsafe to operate. Failing to address these types of issues on gas-powered equipment, if it has been found to be faulty, could result in loss of employment and their license, imprisonment, and / or serious fines. So, in other words, they are just doing their job and do not have a choice.

So, what should you do if you have received a Warning Tag or your hot water tank, boiler, or furnace was Red Tagged?

Our company can send out a licensed gas fitter who will assess your problem, give you a written quote for resolving the problems, and then if you accept our quote that can immediately start on repairs to your equipment to bring it back to safe operating condition (or, if necessary, replace it) so that you can stop stressing out about the issue and return to enjoying your life.

After our company has resolved the issues, we will remove the Red Tag or Warning Tag from Enbridge Gas and all of the documentation will be taken to our office. We will then notify Enbridge Gas that the problems have been resolve and that the equipment is in safe working condition now. We will also give them our license numbers and if they have turned your gas off already, we will have them turn it back on.

We will handle everything for you, so you will not need to do anything.

What are the differences between a Warning Tag (Type B) and Red Tag (Type A)?

  • A Red Tag (Type A) from Enbridge Gas means your equipment has been deemed to be too dangerous to use and had to be immediately shut down in order to protect your home and family. A Red Tag results in the gas being turned off to the appliance (hot water tank or furnace) and then capped off. It cannot be turned on again until the problem is fixed.  Having your heating system shut off during the middle of the winter can be really upsetting. We understand this and will make your phone call a top priority to ensure that your heat is turned back on as soon as possible.

  • A Warning Tag (Type B) from Enbridge Gas is issued when your equipment is deemed to be unsafe when there is a code infraction (this is often related to problems that relate to the way the equipment was originally installed or a venting issue). In this situation, usually, your gas will not be turned off and you will be given up to 30 days to resolve the issue to avoid your gas getting turned off. Over time, of course, codes change, so it is common that what might have been up to code several years ago does not meet the more stringent newer codes of today. In this situation, you will often be issued a Warning Tag to give you time to get the issue resolved without your gas getting immediately turned off.

If a Warning Tag is issued to you, we strongly recommend that you don’t wait to try getting the problem resolved since repairs may take extra time to complete (for example, specially ordered materials or parts may delay completion). Our trucks are, of course, well-stocked with a majority of needed standard materials and we will do everything possible to ensure that your issues can be resolved fast.

If you do not resolve a Warning Tag (Type B), Enbridge Gas will have your gas turned off to your house for failing to comply with their requirements. Once your gas is turned off, it can take some time to get it turned on again, so it is best to resolve the problem without the provided warning period.
