When it comes to residential water heater options, there are generally two types: storage tank types and on-demand water heaters. Below is a list of the 4 most common water heaters that are purchased and installed annually in Canada.

1. Tank storage type water heaters come in varying sizes and configurations. The most commonly installed types of hot water tanks are the power vented (also called induced draft) hot water tank, and the conventional hot water tank. These are both natural gas tanks though they are available in propane as well. Other types of gas fired hot water tanks include a direct vent and power direct vent tank used for specific environments. Hot water tanks are also offered as a basic electric tank and as a heat pump hot water tank which also runs on electricity but cuts your electricity consumption by 75% compared to a standard tank. 2. Tankless water heaters are called instantaneous water heaters, on-demand water heaters, and continuous water heaters (for obvious reasons). Natural gas or propane tankless water heaters are the most efficient systems, only heating your water when you need it. They lie dormant (and can do so for extended periods of time) and are ready to provide you with hot water when you need it. Some tank type water heaters as well as some tankless type of water heaters can be used to provide supplementary in-floor heating, as a bonus to warm your bathroom, kitchen, or basement floor. They were careful to lay down mats to protect the floors as they moved the old water heater out and the new one in. JDS were up front about their process and their pricing was very competitive which made my decision to hire them very easy (plus, they came highly recommended).  Thank you to the team - Jeremy, Germane, Jithin and Alex - for making the best of  returning my old tank and then installing the new one in a very tight space. And thank you to André as well who returned the next day to finalize a few things requiring his expertise. He also provided me with a lot of information on extending the life of my new HWH.
